Ancient Painting, Saint Francis of Assisi XVIIth, (hands from Antwerp).
This painting represents a Franciscan saint, most likely Saint Francis of Assisi, depicted in bust, with his arms crossed on his chest in an attitude of deep devotion. His melancholy gaze is directed towards a Christ on the cross appearing in shadow on the left of the composition.
The scene is treated in a dark and introspective atmosphere, typical of post-Tridentine spiritual painting. The chiaroscuro highlights the expressiveness of the face, the delicate complexion and the hands marked by a slight injury evoking the stigmata.
Oil on oak wood, presence of the hand of Antwerp on the back as well as the Tower of Antwerp. (see guild of Saint-Luc active in the 16th and 17th centuries)
Note old restorations, some repainting and wear.
