Around 1915, a Scotsman
who worked in a cork factory in Palamos had observed the large number
of Arundo donax reeds that grew around the city. At that time, the
cane was used for making baskets in the garden and construction
tasks. The Scottish called Smith probably was a player
quelqu'instrument and therefore knew his reeds then were made of
reeds.First Smith spoke with a basket maker who used the cane for
his work and asked him if he could get the reed very hard to send in
Scotland. The weaver then collected samples and Smith gave him an
address where to send them. After some discussion by trying different
types of cane, basket maker received his first letter from Scotland,
in English. At that time, Mr. Smith was no longer in Palamos basket
maker and understood nothing of what he was told of Scotland. One
night, during a walk along the Palamos bay, the basket maker was met
with his friend, Julio Perxés, who spoke English and, knowing of the
existence of the letter he offered to translate. The text called
for a small amount of reed and clean Mr. Perxés took care to answer
the letter and to send some samples of good quality. The basket maker
was very happy there and left everything in his hands.Julio
Perxés believed in trade possibilities with the provision of reed
and began a good cane harvest plan. During the following year, Perxés
sent small packages with samples of reed pipes to Glasgow at the same
time manufacturers and asked to return the useless reed, soft to
obtain knowledge and experience in better quality cane selection
.When Julio Perxés finally decided to start the business he
received the collaboration of his brother, Mr. Francisco Medir, and
it is unclear why the plant has received the name of Medir instead of
Perxés.This was the beginning of the cane industry in Palamos
and with time and experience of these two brothers-they got a high
quality selection of the reed. They studied the appropriate soil
where the plant was receiving more strength and they got a series of
own plantations around the city. As the industry has grown over
plantations were implemented and harvesting of cane from other parts
of Catalonia gradually became necessary. Since the 40s, he was the
son of Francisco who assumes the continuation of the case, Mr. Lluís
Medir who was pushed and grow. Currently his son are the three
factory owners though, Verily who is the manager is Carles.
