Rare early autograph cover addressed in the hand of Johann Caspar Lavater (1741–1801) — the renowned Swiss theologian, poet, and founder of physiognomy, the study of character through facial features.

The front panel reads “an Herrn Maÿer, gehorsamst” (“To Mr. Maÿer, respectfully”), with a contemporary note at lower left identifying him as “Lavater the Physiognomist.” The paper is laid, with visible chain lines and natural folds typical of late 18th-century correspondence.

Lavater’s theories on human expression influenced generations of thinkers, writers, and artists — including Goethe, Blake, and Fuseli. Authentic material from his hand is scarce outside major institutional collections.

Condition: Very good for age, minor toning and small seal tear at fold.

Date: c. 1780–1790s

Size: Approx. 5.5 x 3.25 in.

An elegant example of Enlightenment-era correspondence connected to one of Europe’s most fascinating intellectuals.
