About the Work
These are genuine porcelain sunflower seeds from Ai Weiwei’s iconic Sunflower Seeds project—meticulously produced in Jingdezhen, China’s historic porcelain capital. Over a two-year period, skilled artisans in Jingdezhen hand-moulded, fired, and hand-painted each seed to exacting standards, capturing the subtle uniqueness that defines this celebrated conceptual artwork.
This set was acquired directly from one of Ai Weiwei’s studio assistants in Jingdezhen—the very city where the original installation was crafted. These pieces are leftover production samples from the actual exhibition series, making them exceptionally rare. With the original Tate Modern installation long closed and such remnants seldom available on the market, owning these seeds is a unique opportunity to hold a tangible fragment of contemporary art history.
A true collector’s item—and a poignant symbol of individuality within mass production.
