The Beatles' Yesterday and Today album with the 2nd state "Butcher" cover in stereo is among the rarest and most sought-after vinyl records in the world. Released in 1966, Capitol Records initially issued the album with a controversial cover featuring the band in butcher smocks surrounded by raw meat and doll parts. After public backlash, the label recalled the album and replaced the cover with a more conventional image. However, some copies with the original "Butcher" cover were modified by pasting the new cover over it, resulting in what is known as the 2nd state.
Stereo versions of the 2nd state Butcher cover are significantly rarer than their mono counterparts. The stereo editions were pressed in smaller quantities, making them more valuable to collectors.
The markings showing this is a 2nd state butcher cover are shown in the photos. The clearest and most obvious marking is the "V" of Ringo Starr's black turtleneck bleeding through from the original butcher cover onto the pasted over "trunk cover. Capitol Records would also print along the top edge "File Under The Beatles". That printing along with the catalog number (ST 2553) printed at the top edge is cut off by the pasted on "trunk cover". The lower right corner of the back cover shows a number 2, indicating this was pressed at the Scranton, Pennsylvania pressing plant.
The record itself is in Very Good (VG) condition with some visible marks. Any marks on the record do not cause the album to skip as they are purely visual and have no further affect to how the record plays. but no scratches and has no affect to how the record plays. The cover is also in Very Good (VG) condition with some wear. It does show to have some clear tape along the three edges, but do go mostly unnoticed. This is still a great buy!
