Adaptor to attach Hilger and Watts / Cooke Troughton and Simms theodolites with the big 'English' thread (approximately 3⅜") to a modern 5/8 - 11 UNC threaded tripod.

As a collector of these instruments I found it difficult and expensive to buy suitable original tripods to display my theodolites, plummets, targets etc. Suitable adaptors to use modern aluminium tripods were quite common back in the day but are now quite rare too, and the American 3½" adaptors do not fit. The solution was to make my own adaptors.

These are 3D printed from waterproof and UV stable tough PET-G plastic and are strong enough for display purposes and light commercial use with care. Of course, you need to observe good practice and not over tighten or carry your tripod with the instrument attached.

You will need to clean the instrument threads throughly and lightly oil them before fitting. The threads are designed to be quite tight to ensure instrument stability and accuracy.

Six small non-threaded holes, to accept M8 bolts in the base, can be used to aid removal if the adaptor is difficult to remove, see the photos for details. The adaptor should only be fitted hand tight and not forced.

All adaptors are tested for fit before dispatch and may show signs of being previously fitted.
