When to Replace Your Car's Brake System？
Brake Pads
- Wear reaching limit: Friction material thickness ≤ 3-4mm (approximately the thickness of a coin's edge) or wear indicator light illuminates;
- Abnormal wear/damage: Uneven surface wear, cracks, chunking, oil contamination, or metallic scraping noise during braking;
- Decreased braking performance: Longer brake pedal travel, weakened braking force, requiring deep pedal depression to achieve desired braking effect.
Brake Rotors
- Wear exceeding limit: Actual thickness ≤ manufacturer-specified "minimum wear thickness," or rotor step depth ＞ 0.5mm that cannot be repaired by grinding;
- Deformation/damage: Steering wheel/vehicle body vibration during braking (excessive runout), rotor grooves ＞ 1mm deep, cracks or heat spots that cannot be repaired by turning;
- Synchronized replacement: After 2-3 brake pad replacements, if brake rotors are near wear limit, synchronized replacement is recommended.
Brake Calipers/Wheel Cylinders
- Seized or leaking piston: Brake pads fail to retract after braking (tight wheels, overheating hubs) or brake fluid leakage on caliper surfaces;
- Stuck guide pins: Cause uneven brake pad wear (one side wearing faster) or braking deviation (vehicle pulling to one side);
- Damaged auxiliary parts: Cracked dust boots or failed return springs (corresponding parts or entire caliper must be replaced).
Brake Fluid
- Reaching replacement cycle: Most models require replacement every 2 years or 40,000 kilometers (whichever comes first, refer to maintenance manual);
- Abnormal fluid condition: Darkened color, turbidity, sediment, or water content ＞ 3% (exceeding test strip standards);
- Replacement after repairs: New brake fluid must be refilled after replacing brake lines, calipers, master cylinders, or other components.
