Condition
Good overall condition for its type and age. The metal surfaces retain a consistent silvery tone with clear definition to the raised scrollwork and floral relief. The hinge is present and functional, allowing the lid to open and close cleanly. Hand-scratched initials are visible to one face, likely added by the original owner. The decoration remains legible and structurally intact, with the central panels smooth and clearly defined.
Description
This item is a small hinged rectangular metal case, formed with softly rounded corners and a shallow domed profile. The proportions are compact and symmetrical, designed to sit comfortably in the hand or pocket when closed.
The exterior is framed on both faces by a raised decorative border worked in low relief. This border features flowing scrollwork, stylised foliate forms, and small floral motifs arranged symmetrically around the perimeter. The decoration contrasts with the plain central cartouches, which are left undecorated and flat.
One face carries lightly hand-scratched initials positioned vertically within the central panel, likely added by the original owner for identification. The reverse face retains an undecorated central field, framed by the same scrolling and floral border.
The lid is attached along one short edge by a discreet hinge, creating a clearly defined seam between the upper and lower sections. The overall construction suggests careful manufacture using pressed and formed metal components, typical of late 19th to early 20th century personal accessories.
Vesta cases, also known as match safes, were commonly produced from the mid-19th century onwards to hold “vestas,” early friction matches. They were designed to protect matches from damage and accidental ignition and were often carried in a pocket or handbag.
In a modern context, this piece may be used for decorative display, as a small storage case for keepsakes or jewellery, or as a historical accessory illustrating everyday personal items from the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
