  • Author
  • Rev. John Newton (1725–1807) was an influential English Anglican clergyman, hymn writer, and abolitionist whose life story remains a testament to personal transformation. Originally a slave ship master, Newton experienced a profound religious awakening during a severe storm at sea in 1748. After leaving the slave trade, he was ordained in 1764 and became a curate at Olney, where he famously wrote "Amazing Grace." Later in life, he became a pivotal voice in the campaign to end the slave trade, publishing Thoughts Upon the African Slave Trade in 1788 and testifying before Parliament. He died in 1807, having lived to see the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire.
