The program is in good condition with a tear on the front cover. There is wear and some creasing on the back cover. The interior pages are very nice. The two stubs are for the Daytona 500 and the 100-mile twins held on Friday. They are in excellent condition with no creasing, holes, or blemishes. Please review the photos as they are part of the item description.
The fifth annual Daytona 500 was held at Daytona International Speedway on February 24, 1963. The Twin 100 qualifying races were won by Junior Johnson in the Ray Fox #3 and 24 year old Johnny Rutherford in the Smokey Yunick #13. The pole was won by Fireball Roberts in the Banjo Mathews #22 with a speed of 160.943 mph.
The race was won by Tiny Lund in the Wood Brothers #21. Lund took the lead from eventual second place finisher Fred Lorenzen with 8 laps to go and never looked back. Rounding out the top five were Ned Jarret, Nelson Stacy, and Dan Gurney.
Tiny Lund was a substitute driver for Marvin Panch. Panch was seriously injured 10 days prior in a fiery crash testing a Maserati. Lund was one of five bystanders who ran to help Panch. Lund would get the winning ride for the 500 when Panch, from his hospital bed, asked Glen and Leonard Wood to put him in the car for the 500.
In the five previous Daytona 500's, this was only the second race that had a caution flag. Lund made one less pit stop than Lorenzen and finished the race without changing tires.
