Description
This is a single long-handled serving ladle made from silver plated base metal, with a deep rounded bowl and a plain, gently curved handle.
The bowl is hemispherical in form with a broad rounded rim and a smooth concave interior. The exterior of the bowl is softly domed and transitions into the handle through a flattened junction rather than a stepped collar.
The handle is long, narrow, and gently arched, tapering slightly toward the terminal end, which is flattened and subtly widened into a rounded spatulate tip. The handle edges are softly rounded, and there is no applied decoration, engraving, or relief ornament.
The ladle is marked on the handle with the impressed wording “QUALITÄT SCHWERT” and the number “90.” In German silver plating conventions, the number “90” indicates the thickness or weight standard of the silver plating applied to the base metal, rather than a purity mark.
Marks of this type were commonly used on German and Austrian silver plated wares from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, particularly for tableware intended for both domestic and catering use.
Ladles of this form were traditionally used for serving soup, sauce, punch, or other liquids from tureens and bowls at the table or sideboard.
In modern use, the ladle can also be used for serving drinks at parties, ladling gravy or stock in the kitchen, serving punch or mulled wine from a bowl, or as a decorative object displayed with other flatware or in a kitchen or dining room setting.
