Fort Barrancas History (as printed on the display)

Constructed on an earthen hill guarding Pensacola Bay, Fort Barrancas played a major role at the outbreak of the Civil War. On January 6, 1861, it was manned by 50 U.S. Army troops with 44 seacoast guns and over 20,000 pounds of gunpowder. The fort was attacked by state militia that same morning. After repelling the attack and spiking the guns, the soldiers moved across the bay to Fort Pickens. The Confederates later abandoned Fort Barrancas in May 1862 after the Union Army captured New Orleans.
