One painting features a riverside cottage shaded by a tall tree, while the other shows a house surrounded by blooming flowers with a river in the background. Both compositions beautifully capture the serenity of rural English life, rendered with warm tones and delicate attention to natural light. Each work is signed “A. Spencer” in the lower left corner and presented in intricately carved gilt frames adorned with floral motifs.

Artist

Augustus Spencer (England, 1860–1924) was a painter, art educator, and administrator best known for his romantic Victorian landscapes. His works often portray the English countryside, emphasizing cottages, rivers, lakes, and dramatic skies with a keen sense of atmosphere and light. Spencer served as Principal of the Royal College of Art (1900–1920), where he implemented educational reforms linking art and design to the industrial needs of the early 20th century.
