Fiction writers who appeared during this period included  A.J. Cronin, Frances Parkinson Keyes, Somerset Maugham, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Evelyn Waugh, and Virginia Woolf. Jessie Wilcox Smith was the primary cover artist during these years.
