LEISHMANIA (Leishmania tropica)
LIFE'S A BEACH, AND THEN YOU FRY!
(Or to be more honest about it...)
LIFE'S A BEACH, BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE FLIES!!!
If you've spent time on a beach in New Jersey (or most ANYWHERE along the east coast), you have probably encountered the dreaded Green Head Fly, the semi-Official State Bird of New Jersey. These blood-suckers will wrestle you for ownership of your own arm! Fortunately they are LARGE and slow, so easy to swat, but make sure you don't miss...their bites HURT and they WILL come back for seconds (AND MORE!), if you let them!!! Tropical Sandflies are smaller and faster, and while their bites can also cause severe itching, the real concern is that they can transmit the Leishmania parasite, causing your beach day to go from wonderful to bad to MUCH WORSE, if not caught and treated early. LEARN THE SYMPTOMS!!!!!
