Game Summary
Saint Mary’s opened the 1935 campaign at Kezar Stadium and dominated Nevada in a game that was characterized by efficient Gaels offense and a stout Saint Mary’s defense.
Contemporary coverage (San Francisco Examiner) ran the headline indicating the Gaels “beat Nevada with five plays,” emphasizing that several quick, effective series — not long, sustained marches — produced the scoring that day. The result was a 20–0 shutout for Saint Mary’s in front of a large Bay-Area crowd.
• Defense first: The shutout reflected Saint Mary’s defensive strength that year; the Gaels allowed relatively few points across the 1935 season (Saint Mary’s outscored opponents 115–37 for the season). The 20–0 scoreline in this opener set an early tone.
• Gaels’ efficient offense: Contemporary reports highlighted quick scoring sequences rather than long drives, meaning Saint Mary’s made the most of field position and big plays. (See the Examiner game note cited in later season writeups.)
• Relative team context: Saint Mary’s (coached by Slip Madigan) finished 1935 a solid 5–2–2; Nevada (coached by C.L. “Brick” Mitchell) had a tougher year and finished 2–6. This game fit those season arcs — Saint Mary’s as the stronger, better-funded Bay Area independent and Nevada as a smaller Far Western Conference program.
• Two Saint Mary’s linemen from the 1935 squad received regional honors that season: guard Marty Kordick and center Wagner Jorgensen were named to All-Pacific Coast squads by some selectors — evidence the Gaels had quality play up front helping both offense and defense. Those linemen would have been central to the control of the line of scrimmage in games like the Nevada.
