Here is a nice oil pastel painting of the Kalmar Nyckel. The painting was done by Dorothy Garthwaite after a rendering of the ship by another Brandywine Valley artist, William Dawson. The painting dates to the the 1980s. This was a Swedish Ship that was used by the first Europeans to settle in what became Wilmington, DE in 1638.
The painting is in very nice condition. The ship is shown at full sail. Beautiful detailing and colors in this rendering of the replica of this Swedish Sailing ship from the 1600s. Very eye-catching with the brightly colored blue and gold ship under full sail. Really beautiful with the blue sky, white clouds, and the waves of the ocean.
The painting has not been examined out of the frame. The painting does not come with an original certificate of authenticity. No foxing or brown spotting of the painting going on.
The painting was nicely framed and matted. No dirt or other specks of anything on the print under the glass. The wood frame is a gold gilt colored wood with nice detailing along the edges. The frame is intact and still solidly together at the seams. The frame shows some minor finish loss. The glass is intact over the print, no cracks or blistering. Nice antique white matting around the piece. No backing paper on the piece.
The painting in frame is 29.75" tall, by 23-5/8" across, by 7/8" wide. The painting that shows thru the matting is 23-1/8" tall by 17-3/8" across.
The painting comes with a 1988 Heartland of Delmarva magazine that has an article on the Kalmar Nyckel as well as a brochure on the ship that is stuck inside it.
