This is for an original Goal Post program for the November
4 1939 game played between the California Bears and U.C.L.A. Bruins at California
Memorial Stadium. The 1939 Bruins would go undefeated in the 1939 season with a
6-0-4 record finishing the season as the number 7 team in the nation as ranked
by the AP poll.
The team was led by the infamous “Gold Dust Gang”, a racial
stereotype slur referring to the mascots on a Gold Dust Washing Powder box. The
Bruins featured an incredible line up of players who would go on to change life
in America long after their football careers at UCLA would come to an end. The
team featured the legendary Jackie Robinson who would later go on to break
baseball’s color barrier, Kenny Washington who would go on to become the first African
American to sign an NFL contract and Woodrow “Woody” Strode who would play
football for the Hollywood Bears, Los Angeles Rams and Calgary Stampeders before
going on to appear in almost 100 films including being nominated for a Golden Globe
award for his role in Spartacus. Woody would also dabble in professional
wrestling for 20 years after college taking on the likes of Gorgeous George and
even teaming up with Bobo Brazil being billed as the Pacific Coast Heavyweight
Champion and the Pacific Coast Negro Heavyweight Champion. Quite a legacy for
three members of possibly the most famous and inspirational teammates in history.
Period.
This game would end with a 20-7 score in favor of UCLA with
Jackie Robinson forced to sit out with a knee injury while Kenny Washington
would lead the team with 141 yards rushing with a touchdown and throwing two
touchdown passes including one to Woody Strode. The program is in nice condition. There was a former crease which runs up and down the book which has
almost disappeared over the years. There is also a paper pull on the front cover near the spine and unfortunately the scorecard is missing. True football history.
