Symon Petliura (1879–1926) was a prominent Ukrainian political and military leader, best known for his role in the Ukrainian struggle for independence during and after World War I. As the head of the Directorate of Ukraine and the supreme commander of the Ukrainian People's Army, he led efforts to establish an independent Ukrainian state during the chaotic years of 1917–1920. Petliura played a key role in resisting both Bolshevik and White Russian forces, as well as opposing Polish and foreign interventions. After the fall of Ukraine's short-lived independence, he lived in exile in Poland and later in Paris, where he was assassinated in 1926. His legacy remains influential in Ukrainian nationalist history.
