Complete 11 volume set of Curiosities of Great Britain England and Wales Delineated uniformly bound in publisher's original dark green cloth, with blind decorative boards and gilt lettering to spines. Frontis, guards and illustrated title page to most volumes. Includes 58 maps engraved by Joshua Archer, one double spread of the Tower and London and 264 engraved plates. Language: English. Size: 22 cm by 14.5 cm. Pages: Various.

• Wear to turned and bruised corners and edges with wear and chipping to spine ends. Minor tears to upper and lower spine end edge cloth. Rubbed cloth with to marks. Some volumes have lightly cracked endpapers, many with spotting. Text blocks are generally well bound with occasional loose binding or stressed gutters to some gatherings, plates (most with tissue guards) and maps. Condition specifics: Vol 1: Tear to lower mid section of spine cloth. Vol 2: Two present but detached plates. Vol 3: One present but detached plate and one loosely bound map. Vol 4: One plate present detached wear tears and heavy wear to edges. Some maps loosely bound. Vol 5: Heavy wear to upper front spine edge with 3cm open tear top spine edge cloth. One present but detached map. Vol 6: Toned and creased tissue guards. Vol 11: One present but detached plate.

• L. Tallis, or Lucinda Tallis, was the widow of John Tallis (of John Tallis & Co.), a prominent publisher and map-maker. After his death (c. 1842), his widow Lucinda continued the business, operating from 3 Jewin Street, London, between roughly 1842-1846. Engravings are by Joshua Archer with Dugdale imprint to lower margin.

• Thomas Dugdale was an editor and compiler who brought knowledge to the masses in an age when antiquarian studies were often reserved for the educated elite. He is best known for Curiosities of Great Britain: England and Wales Delineated, a publication that condensed history, topography, and antiquarian lore into an accessible format for a broad readership. Curiosities was first published in 1838 in part-issue form, sold weekly or monthly in affordable instalments. It was later collected into bound multi-volume sets, often with engraved county maps adapted from earlier Cole & Roper plates and later Archer maps. By presenting county histories, maps, and local curiosities in a compact, illustrated style, Curiosities brought the study of Britain’s past and places to the middle-class household. It provided the Victorian reader with both a reference library and a touring companion, blending education with entertainment.
