Scientist autographed 3x5 inch card. I will also include an unsigned 4x6 photograph of the only group photograph of
Wernher
von Braun's "Rocket Team" / Operation Paperclip
Was a group of German scientists and engineers who developed the V-2 rocket for Nazi Germany during World War II. After the war, they were brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip and played a crucial role in the development of American rocketry and space programs. Operation Paperclip officially authorized 118 team members to come to the United States. The members of the group arrived at Fort Bliss, Texas, between September 1945 and early 1946. Wernher von Braun and seven others travelled by plane; the others came in groups of about 55 each by ship. The members comprising the "Rocket Team" changed over time. Hans Lindenberg died at Ft. Bliss on 13 February 1946 of complications of diabetes and is buried on the installation. Dr. Ernst Steinhoff was part of the team at Ft. Bliss, transferred to the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, but left after a year or two to become the the Chief Scientist at Holloman AFB. Other individual regarded as members of the Rocket Team were not among these initial 118. Wernher von Braun was able convince the Americans to add approximately 25 others who had worked in Peenemünde but who could not be located as the team left Germany.
