This auction is for a Superb Large and Rare Antique Flow Blue Ironstone Well & Tree Platter made in the mid 1800s by Furnival of Staffordshire England in the company’s Striking Ceylon pattern
The pattern depicts at the center a classic floral design with large flowers planted in an urn or jardinière near a garden fence with a tree in the background and a flower and geometric pattern border design featuring butterflies.
The platter Displays Wonderfully and is in Very Good condition, especially for its age. With its striking Flow Blue and Large Size, it will instantly become the Decorative Focal Point of any room.
It is very thick and heavy and measures an impressive 20 ¼ inches across, 16 1/8 inches wide and 2 3/8 inches tall.
There are no chips or cracks or damage with the exception of a very faint and hard to see spider-web crazing on the bottom of the gravy well (last photo). It doesn’t detract from this Great Find. There is fine, even under-glaze crazing as expected from ironstone of this era and also some roughness in spots on the edging (photo 11).
The piece has an impressed FURNIVAL mark but no pattern name. It clearly is in the Ceylon pattern, however.
