This is an author-signed first edition of The Peabody Story: Events in Peabody’s History 1626–1972 by John A. Wells, published in 1972 by the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts.

Wells spent years gathering material for this book, working through archives, local historical societies, and the Essex Institute. In his preface, he notes how the project began as a personal hobby before expanding into a full-scale chronicle of Peabody’s transformation from its early settlement days to its emergence as a thriving Massachusetts city. His goal, as he wrote, was to unite longtime residents with newcomers by preserving the city’s heritage and encouraging pride in its history.

The book features detailed accounts, maps, and illustrations, making it an essential reference for local history enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Condition: Very Good. Black boards with gilt seal and spine lettering are clean and bright with only light shelf wear. Binding is tight. Pages are clean and unmarked, with age toning and areas of discoloration to endpapers and some interior margins, likely from something once stored inside the book. No odors, library stamps, or writing beyond the author’s signed inscription on the front endpaper (“Best regards, John A. Wells”).

Perfect for collectors of signed local histories, Massachusetts history, and Americana.
