A selection of Sappho's work from a variety of translators, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, from the publisher's Foulis Books series. Descended from the famous 18th-century Glaswegian Foulis brothers, Thomas Noble Foulis (1874-1943) specialized in "exquisitely designed, charmingly illustrated, beautifully printed, and yet reasonably affordable books"

Colour frontispiece tipped onto grey paper as issued with tissue guard, 7 similar plates, all after watercolours by Ernest A. R. Collings, head- and tailpieces. Text printed in purple and black.

The Ex libris indicates this book belonged to an S.S. Hammersley. The inscription is his name and the date April 24th 1919. The only S.S. Hammersley I can find any mention of is Samuel Schofield Hammersley who was an industrialist and Conservative member of Parliament. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Hammersley

Hammersley married in 1919, this book could have been a wedding gift perhaps?

Book is in good condition for being 106 years old. The illustrations are all present and the tissue lining is intact. There is some yellowing to the inside front and back pages as seen. There is also some staining on the edges of a couple of pages as shown.
