Description:
This is a Victorian-era legal indenture document, dated 6th April 1893, formally conveying freehold hereditaments—land and property—located at No. 96 Park Street, St. Pancras, Middlesex. The document records a legal transaction transferring ownership from J.T. Price Esq. and associated parties to the Misses Abraham, specifically Eliza Ann Abraham and Mary Price Abraham. It was registered with the Middlesex Deeds Department on 14th May 1893, as confirmed by a red ink registration stamp on the reverse panel.
The indenture is composed of high-quality parchment, a material traditionally used for official documents during the 19th century. The surface is smooth and semi-translucent, with ruling lines in red ink framing the content throughout. The layout is landscape when opened fully, and the document consists of multiple joined sheets containing formal legal clauses, party names, property details, and financial agreements.
Handwritten in copperplate script, the text is clear and formal, with enlarged headings such as “This Indenture,” “Whereas,” and “Witnesseth” marking key sections. The property transaction involved a sum of £270 and names several parties, including John Timbrell Price, Emily Elliott McClellan, Herbert Timbrell Bulstrode, and others. A notable section includes a formal declaration by a Perpetual Commissioner, confirming that Emily Elliott McClellan gave her consent to the deed independently, in accordance with legal requirements of the time concerning married women.
The front page features two embossed red/orange duty stamps, one marked “One Pound.” The reverse includes two impressed silver duty stamps bearing a royal cypher. The final panel is signed by various parties and sealed with seven red wax seals. Signatures include W. Timbrell Price, Eliza Ann Abraham, Emily Elliott McClellan, Herbert Timbrell Bulstrode, and Mary Price Abraham.
This document provides an excellent example of late 19th-century British legal procedure, particularly in relation to property transactions and family trusts. St. Pancras, where the property was located, is a central district in London with rich historical and architectural significance.
While originally intended for legal use, this item may now serve as a historical reference, an educational resource, or a decorative display piece in a law office, archival collection, or period-themed setting.
