This is an authentic stampless folded letter (SFL) sent from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C. and dated June 21, 1832.

Postal Markings: Bold red circular PHILa / JUN 21 date stamp and manuscript “20¾” rate marking in red ink.

Recipient: Addressed to Henry McMorle (or McMorte) Esq., Washington, District of Columbia.

Sender’s Docketing: On the reverse, manuscript notation reads “C. C. Watson & Son, June 21, 1832, 208”.

Seal: Traces of the original red wax seal remain.

Postal History Context: The 20¾ cent charge reflects the U.S. postal rates in effect (1816–1845), based on distance and sheet count before the introduction of adhesive stamps. Letters were typically paid upon receipt.

This is a fine example of early American postal history, showing clear Philadelphia markings, manuscript rate, and business docketing.

Condition: Normal folds, light toning, some seal loss as expected. Writing is clear and legible.

Historical Note:

1832 was the year of the first U.S. cholera epidemic, the Nullification Crisis, and Andrew Jackson’s reelection campaign. Business correspondence from this period provides an interesting glimpse into the workings of early American commerce and government.
