🌏 About the Khaen (Khene)

The Khaen (Thai: แคน) is a traditional free-reed mouth organ of Lao origin, now deeply rooted in the culture of Laos and Thailand’s Isan region. Its multiple bamboo pipes connect to a hollow hardwood wind chamber, allowing the player to create a rich, layered, and continuous harmony by both inhaling and exhaling. It is the signature sound of Mor Lam music and is recognized by UNESCO as an important part of humanity’s musical heritage.

• Acclimation is Required: Upon arrival, please allow the instrument to sit outside of its packaging at room temperature for 24–48 hours before playing. This allows the bamboo and wax to safely adjust to your local humidity and prevents the bamboo from cracking.
• Do Not Pick the Wax: The black material sealing the pipes is natural wax, which is essential for the instrument's airtight sound. It is not dirt or packing material—please do not remove or press hard on it.
• Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Never store your Khaen near radiators, air conditioning vents, or in direct sunlight.
