The BSR Birmingham Stove & Range Co. Yellow White Enameled No 8 Dutch Oven is a vintage collectible cookware piece made of durable cast iron. The Dutch oven features a classic no 8 size, making it versatile for various cooking needs.
The yellow and white enameled finish adds a touch of nostalgia to any kitchen, while the brand name ensures quality and authenticity. This cast iron Dutch oven is compatible with electric and gas stoves, making it a practical and stylish addition to any home cook's collection.
Provenance: I found this at a thrift store in Honolulu, Hawaii. I immediately recognized this as a BSR due to the handle, and I had to bring it home! It was easily packaged safely, placed in a check-in luggage, and brought to California. My understanding is that a third-party would buy from BSR, enamel it, and sell it at department stores. I love to think about this piece’s history: From the foundries in Birmingham, Alabama. Then enameled at an after-market place, transported and sold in Hawaii, and brought back by me to California!
I highly recommend checking out Steven’s Youtube Channel, “Cast Iron Cookware” for more information on enameled BSR’s. Specifically, the video titled, “BSR #3 Enameled Cast Iron Cookware” posted November, 2024. He shows the same piece/color. It is a century series dutch oven.
With regard to the piece specifically - this was made post 1960’s due to the “Made in USA” mark. It is a No. 8 Dutch Oven, and is a 10in.
There is very limited chipping to the enamel. The most notable spot is near where you would put a steel rod on those holes to hang the piece. Second, there is some very small chipping on the rim of the lid. There is no chipping inside the bowl, meaning it is safe for cooking and food consumption.
There is limited “pitting” on the enamel - small pinholes which appear to be where the enamel did not cover the pot. Please see pictures.
Lastly, small gray scuffing on the lid and the lid’s handle.
Overall, it is an amazing piece in fabulous condition given how fragile the enamel can be. If you have not purchased or cooked with enamel cast iron cookware before, please do your research to ensure you take care of the piece.
Please ask me questions if you have any questions- offers will be considered.
