a pupil of Anton Bruckner and was given the honor of conducting the World

also conducted the World Premiere of Richard Strauss's "Die Frau Ohne
Schatten" in Vienna, 1919. Schalk had a decorated career including
posts in Reichenburg, Graz, Prague, New York, Berlin, London and finally
Vienna, where he was a principal conductor at the Hofoper as of 1900 and
principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1904-1921. From
1918 until his death, he was the General Director of the Vienna Staatsoper.
(Richard Strauss was co-Director from 1919-1924). Schalk made some
excellent recordings, the Beethoven 5th, 6th and 8th are particularly well
respected. We have not encountered a Schalk photograph of this size
before.
Erwin Kerber, (1891-1943) grew up in Salzburg, studied law in Vienna and
returned to his native city to work for the Salzburg Festspiele, where he
eventually became General Director of the Festival. In 1936, he was
appointed General Director of the Vienna Staatsoper and remained there until
1940. During the Anschluss he helped many Jews leave Austria including
Bruno Walter's daughter, conductor Josef Krips, and tenor Richard Tauber among
the many.
