Activated in 1961
Headquartered at Nha Trang, then Bien Hoa, and other outposts
Tasked with unconventional warfare, counterinsurgency, and foreign internal defense (FID) missions throughout South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos
The 5th SFG was the tip of the spear for MACV-SOG, CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group), and other deep operations. They trained and fought alongside Montagnards, ARVN Rangers, Cambodian forces, and Laotian irregulars.
An Operational Detachment Bravo (SFOD-B) is a company-level command and support element.
Each B-team supports multiple A-teams (SFOD-As) in a region.
B-51 would have provided:
Operational planning
Logistics & comms
Medical and intel support
Liaison with higher HQ (MACV, SOG, CORDS, etc.)
B-51 specifically may have operated out of:
Kontum, Pleiku, or a Corps Tactical Zone (CTZ) AOR (Area of Responsibility)
Attached to support CIDG camps or recon elements near the Ho Chi Minh Trail
In the field, Montagnards, ARVN troops, and civilians called any U.S. medic or doctor “Bác Sĩ” (pronounced “bahk see”).
Some were U.S. Army Medical Corps officers (Captains or Majors)
Others were Special Forces-qualified medics with extensive surgical/trauma training
A few were CIA-affiliated or civilian contractors operating in unofficial or cover roles
They were embedded with:
SF B-teams as the head medical officer
Provided:
Trauma care for SF and indigenous troops
Public health and civil affairs outreach
Training local medics and Montagnard health workers
Often performed surgery in field hospitals, under fire or austere conditions
These BAC SI were lifesavers and force multipliers.
Treated wounds from firefights, landmines, ambushes
Delivered babies, vaccinated entire villages
Gained the trust of remote tribes through care and compassion
Often marked for assassination by the VC/NVA, because of their influence
Doctors attached to SFOD-Bs in border regions sometimes crossed into Cambodia or Laos, supporting:
MACV-SOG recon teams
Search and rescue (SAR) missions
Phoenix Program medical intelligence
Some BAC SI were awarded Silver Stars, Distinguished Service Crosses, or Air Medals for their valor under fire.
SF medics (18D predecessors) saved hundreds of lives in jungle conditions, often improvising surgery with only a scalpel and IV bag.
