Rare autographed postcard photograph of the British pianist, February 8th, 1913.

Adela Verne (1877 – 1952) was a important British pianist.  Some consider her the greatest female pianist of her time.

She was born into the musical German immigrant family, Würm that was changed to Verne.  Her three sisters Mary, Mathilde and Alice were all pianists, Mary was also a noted composer who as an adult made her home in Germany and reverted to Würm.

When Clara Schumann was on a tour of Britain, she heard the little wunderkind and wanted her to come to Germany to study, but her parents refused.  Mathilde and Alice continued to teach their younger sister and eventually Schumann’s daughter Marie taught Adela.  She performed Tchaikovsky’s 1^st piano concerto at the age of 13, with the composer in the audience who insisted on meeting her.  At 14, she met Jan Paderewski who mentored her for years, often at his Swiss home. She made her American debut performing Paderewski’s piano concerto in A minor.  She was a great success playing on all continents and Leschetizky after hearing her perform in Vienna invited her to give a recital to his students.  She also accompanied violinists Joseph Joachim, Eugene Ysaye and Mischa Elman, cellist Alfredo Piatti and opera singers Nellie Melba, Luisa Tetrazzini, Amelita Galli-Curci and John McCormick in recital in London.  She also was given the first recital by a pianist in Royal Albert Hall.
