• Location: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California

• Attendance: About 35,000 spectators

• Final Score: USC 39, College of the Pacific 0

Pre-Game Context

USC Trojans

• Head Coach: Howard Jones, in his 13th season.

• USC was a national powerhouse through the 1930s — Rose Bowl champions in 1931 and 1932 — and coming off a 4–2–3 record in 1936.

• The 1937 team was expected to rebound behind quarterback Grenville Lansdell and a veteran line.

College of the Pacific (COP)

• Head Coach: Amos Alonzo Stagg, the legendary pioneer of the sport, who was in his 5th season at the Stockton, California school (after his long tenure at Chicago).

• COP, a much smaller independent, was known for disciplined play and creative formations but faced an enormous talent gap against USC’s depth.

This game was the season opener for both teams, and also marked one of Stagg’s first visits to the Coliseum with his Pacific program.

Aftermath

• USC went on to post a 4–4–2 record in 1937, including wins over Oregon State and Washington, and a close loss to Notre Dame.

• College of the Pacific finished 4–5–1, showing improvement against smaller West Coast programs later in the season.

• The 1937 meeting was the last official game between USC and COP; the programs would not meet again after Stagg’s retirement.

Summary

On September 25, 1937, before 35,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the USC Trojans opened their season with a 39–0 rout of Amos Alonzo Stagg’s College of the Pacific.

Led by Grenville Lansdell’s command of the offense and a dominating Trojan line, USC rolled up over 400 yards of offense and scored in every quarter.

Stagg’s plucky Tigers fought with heart but were overmatched by USC’s speed, depth, and precision — a vivid snapshot of the era when small-college football crossed paths with national powers in early-season California showcases.
