IGOR KIPNIS

The American harpsichordist, advocate for the forte piano and intellectual musicologist sends a partially typed and partially autographed letter signed on his stationary correspondence card. November 13, 1978.  He writes to an unknown music publisher of library regarding their assistance on a project for the "Yehudi Menuhin Guide Series". He's looking for pre 19th Century repertoire for harpsichord solo, and music and dance related books.  The card is prescored in 3 parts so it could be sent in a small envelope.  The overall measurements are 4" x 6".

Igor Kipnis (1930-2002) was the son of opera bass Alexander Kipnis.  A Harvard graduate, he studied harpsichord with Fernando Valenti, a pupil of Ralph Kirkpatrick.  He also has Liszt roots through his maternal grandfather Heniot Levy, his first piano teacher who studied with two pupils of Carl Taussig, Karl Barth and Oscar Raif.  Kipnis made his debut in 1959 and recorded significantly and concertized world-wide as a soloist and with orchestra.  As a musicologist, he wrote numerous articles and edited and arranged various musical editions of early music.
