Author: DOYLE, [Sir] Arthur Conan (1859-1930)
Title: The Parasite
Publication: London: Constable, 1894
Description: [Supernatural Fiction] FIRST EDITION, first impression, the soft wrapper issue. Small octavo (16 x 9cm), pp.[6] 125 [1]. Publisher's blue-green paper wraps titled and decorated in dark green. Published simultaneously with the cloth-bound copy, but in our experience far scarcer. Gently toned, with occasional spotting throughout. Binding weak. Spine cracked and chipped, with significant loss to head and tail. Lighter wear with a few minor marks to covers. Holding together, but delicate. Good. Doyle's own unique attempt at a vampire novel, albeit with his vampire a spirit sucking entity rather than the more conventional bloodsucker. The parallels with the vampire legend were made even more explicit in 1897 when Constable published 'Dracula', and immediately re-issued 'The Parasite' in matching yellow cloth with red titles.
