  • Description: Pre-World War II War Department map reading manual. Includes the following sections: general map information; orientation and location; distance; direction; relief; types and characteristics of aerial photographs and mosaics; and interpretation of aerial photographs.
  • Provenance: This manual once belonged to Army officer Coburn L. Berry. Stamped on the front cover is “COBURN L. BERRY/Lt. Col. 28th C. A. Trg. Bn./Commanding.” At the time of World War I, Berry is listed as Second Lieutenant assigned to Battery D (Dow Battery, Bridgton, Maine), 2nd Battalion, Maine Heavy Field Artillery, 56th Pioneer Infantry. In 1935 he was elevated to a Major in the Coastal Artillery Corps. In 1940 he was assigned as Instructor at the Minnesota National Guard at Mankato. Later that year he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. According to the stamp on this manual, he eventually was Commanding Officer of the 28th Coastal Artillery Training Battalion.”
