Historical Significance:

Hugh J. Grant (1858–1910) was a powerful figure in New York City's Tammany Hall political machine and remains notable as the youngest person ever elected mayor of NYC. At the age of 31, Grant took office and served two terms from 1889 to 1892. His administration was marked by efforts to modernize the city’s infrastructure and public services, though his tenure was also shadowed by the influence of Tammany Hall and widespread political patronage.

Biography:

Hugh John Grant was born on September 10, 1858, in New York City to Irish immigrant parents. He graduated from Manhattan College and earned a law degree from Columbia Law School. His entry into politics came through his ties with Tammany Hall, the Democratic political machine that dominated New York City politics during the era.

Grant began his political career as an alderman and then became Sheriff of New York County before being elected mayor in 1889. During his two terms, he oversaw the expansion of the city’s sewer and sanitation systems, improvements in public transportation, and efforts to regulate public utilities. He was also a major proponent of the consolidation of the boroughs, a vision realized a few years later in 1898.

After leaving office, Grant continued to be involved in various business and civic efforts, including serving as Collector of Internal Revenue under President Grover Cleveland. He married Julia Murphy, daughter of U.S. Senator Edward Murphy, further tying him to the powerful political elite of the time.

He died suddenly of a heart attack on November 3, 1910, at the age of 52. He is buried in Old Saint Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx.

Collector’s Note:

Authentic signatures of Hugh J. Grant are scarce, especially given his relatively short political career and early death. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of New York City history from the Gilded Age.
