*About the Wave Concept by Marita Huurinainen from its website: "The WAVE shoe is a modern Finnish wooden shoe which is light to walk in. The heel provides a comfortable angle for the foot: rising softly and then bending to form a round curve under the heel – like a wave about to crash the sea shore. The body of each WAVE shoe is made out of Finnish birch, using traditional wood bending techniques in an innovative way. Moulding wood into the design was at first deemed impossible by experts. After persistent testing, however, the appropriate technique – pioneered by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto – was applied to the manufacturing process successfully. WAVE captures the feeling and atmosphere of the Finnish summer: light, colorful, playful, different and happy.

The WAVE concept was born out of experimenting with basic shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares. The intention was to create a functional and beautiful design out of a simple shape. Different materials yielded into different kinds of products and the WAVE shoe was the result of one of these experiments. It was a success as the shoe embodied both functionality and beauty. The shoe design was patented and in 2009 it received the Ornamo Design Award for Best Design of the Year. The design is internationally protected and the complex production technology has been developed by Marita Huurinainen.'
