Full partitur orchestral score baring a light "complimentary copy" stamp on the front cover. Boosey and Hawkes F.S. 226. The score bears the copyright date 1960 which has been listed on the first page with a sticker, covering the 1957 original copyright. Interestingly, Boosey is listed as the copyright holder. 62 pages of music excluding covers and title page with instrumentation on the verso.

DDT would conduct occasionally. We have reviewed the dynamic markings in this score and the same score at The Library of Congress with Copland's dynamic markings on his copy of the score which he used to conduct. The markings are very similar, though not completely the same and due to the size of the markings it suggests that Copland worked with DDT on the score.

The original work, "Piano Variations" written in 1930 and published by Cos Cob Press, a New York publisher run by Alma Morgenthau Wertheim in 1932. Her press was designed to popularize the works of American composers and Carlos Chavez, Aaron Copland, Roy Harris and Charles Ives were among her stable of composers. The Cos Cob Press did not survive the end of the 1930's and eventually Boosey purchased the catalog. Copland always loved the variations and thought he would orchestrate it to bring the work new life.

The work was commissioned by Robert Whitney and the Louisville Orchestra. The World Premiere was on March 5th, 1958.

Copland said about his friend and colleague, David Del Tredici is that rare find among composers – a creator with a truly original gift. I venture to say that his music is certain to make a lasting impression on the American musical scene. I know of no other composer of his generation who composes music of greater freshness and daring, or with more personality. Upon Copland's death he learned that the composer had chosen Del Tredici to sit on the board of the Copland Foundation.

A special association with not only a dedication and autograph, but DDT's markings for performance.
