Karl Bryullov (1799-1852) was a Russian painter and draftsman, the most famous representative of the Bryullov artistic dynasty, one of the main artists of late Russian classicism of the first half of the 19th century; the author of monumental historical canvases, he also successfully worked as a portraitist and genre painter. Honorary free member (since 1834) and professor (1836-1849) of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, collegiate councilor (1846). Member of the Academy of San Luca in Rome, the Brera Academy in Milan and the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma; professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.
