The Approach S44 is Garmin’s most affordable golf watch with an AMOLED display — the same screen technology found in the $399.99 S50 and $649.99+ S70. The vivid 1.2-inch AMOLED color touchscreen is a transformative upgrade from the S12’s monochrome MIP display: full-color CourseView maps you can zoom and pan via touch, PinPointer for blind approaches, and a modern interface that makes the entire round easier to navigate.

43,000+ preloaded CourseView maps worldwide provide front, middle, and back yardages from anywhere on the course. Green View lets you place the pin for accurate distance readings. PinPointer shows the direction to the flag on dogleg holes, elevated greens, and any blind approach — a feature not available on the S12. Hazard and dogleg distances help with club selection. Score rounds on the watch and sync to the Garmin Golf app for stat tracking and handicap. CT1 and CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately) add club-by-club data.

Smart notifications (texts, calls, emails, calendar alerts) keep you connected between shots. Basic activity tracking covers steps, calories, and run/cycle profiles. With up to 10 days of battery in smartwatch mode and a slim 43mm / 42g profile, it wears comfortably all day. The S44 does not include heart rate monitoring, Garmin Pay, or music storage — for those, step up to the Approach S50 at $399.99.

Trade-off: GPS battery drops from 30 hours (S12) to 15 hours (S44) due to the AMOLED display. The S12’s MIP screen uses far less power.

Does the S44 have heart rate monitoring?

No. The S44 does not include a wrist-based heart rate sensor. There is no heart rate tracking, no sleep monitoring, no stress tracking, no Body Battery, and no Pulse Ox. For those features with your golf GPS, step up to the Approach S50.

Does the S44 support Garmin Pay or music?

No. The S44 delivers smart notifications (texts, calls, emails) but has no NFC for Garmin Pay and no on-watch music storage. For contactless payments and music from Spotify, Amazon Music, or Deezer, step up to the Approach S50 or S70.

Does the S44 have PlaysLike Distance?

PlaysLike Distance is available on the S44 with a Garmin Golf membership. The membership also unlocks enhanced CourseView maps, green contour data, and touch targeting. On the S50, PlaysLike Distance is built-in at no extra cost.

What makes the S44 better than the S12?

The S44 replaces the S12’s 0.9-inch monochrome MIP display with a 1.2-inch AMOLED color touchscreen — the same screen found on the S50 and S70. It adds PinPointer, smart notifications, 5 ATM water rating, and basic activity tracking. The trade-off is GPS battery life: 15 hours on the S44 vs. 30 hours on the S12.
