Up for sale is a genuine first edition copy of Draw Comics! Here’s How — A Complete Book on Cartooning by George Leonard Carlson, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, copyright 1933.

This 58-page hardcover is one of the earliest and most influential “how to draw” cartooning guides ever published, walking readers through figure drawing, facial expressions, perspective, lettering, composition, and how to break into the comic strip business — all illustrated with Carlson’s own distinctive artwork, including a full-page Sunday-style strip, “Superstitious Sidney.”

Carlson went on to become one of the great Golden Age cartoonists, best known for his work on Jingle Jangle Comics and The Pie-Face Prince of Old Pretzelburg, a strip later reprinted in The Toon Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics edited by Art Spiegelman. This very title holds a documented place in comics history — Spiegelman’s own copy was featured in the 2009 exhibit Art Spiegelman: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&!* at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The book remains influential enough to still be in print today via Dover Publications as Learn to Draw Comics.
