Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION: Victorian Period Accessories. Antique 19th Century original Chromolithograph. The price is for the large framed Chromolithograph only. The smaller one in 2nd pic is for scale only and not included in the price. Quite RARE original large version of Beatrice Cenci chromolithograph shown at the International Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The Portrait of Beatrice Cenci Chromolithograph is after an original painting by Ginevra Cantofoli (once thought to be painted by Guido Reni) in about circa 1600. Beatrice Cenci was a Roman noblewoman imprisoned for killing her father who repeatedly sexually abused her. Despite the outpouring of sympathy for her, the papal ordered her execution by decapitation in 1599 at the age of 22. Beatrice Cenci became a symbol of the people of Rome's resistance to the arrogant aristocracy. This is a Chromolithograph done in the early 1870s. It was done by Colton, Zahm, and Roberts of New York. If you look at pictures #2 you will see the one size that became for sale and you will almost always find if you come across chromo( it measures about 9" x 11"). This large version is about 33" x 27 1/2" ( including frame). The one that is for sale is the large framed Chromolithograph also made by Colton Zahm and Roberts. They made a handful of these large Chromolithographs using one for the International Centennial Exposition of 1876. I believe this is the one that was used at the Exhibition as it has the 1876 Exhibition tag on the back. This is a large chromolithograph that was mounted on canvas with stretchers as originally produced. I have come across only 2 others of this size in my 25+ years of specialization and neither of those had the Exposition tag. These type of Chromolithographs were put on canvas, without glass, to look like a painting. Because they didn't have glass to protect them they were very susceptible to damage. This chromolithograph is in it's original Victorian gold gilded frame (frame is as is). This chromolithograph dates to circa 1876. It is almost 150 years old. Fair condition for age. It is NOT perfect, it is antique and has character. This was made to look like a painting so it never has glass to protect it. Original frame. Nice detailed chromolithograph. Chromo colors have muted from age. There are a few, what I feel are minor, paper tears on the Chromo (pictured). None of the small paper tears go through the canvas. Canvas has no holes. Lower maker label with description of Beatrice Cenci on back of Chromo has darkened and is quite worn (pictured). The chromo still displays nicely on a wall. The original frame was probably fabulous at one time but is being sold as is. The corners of the frame at one time were large carved with small fruit and leaves. This was quite fragile. Most of the corners are gone. There is only a few small carved pieces if fruit left..The corners are touched up with gold. Most of the gold gilding is shiny and original. The coved inner stencils are still there. There is what looks like tarnish on some of the gold gilding. Frame is still large and impressive as it is but would have been fabulous before the damages. Frame is definitely worth restoration. Other than the large corner losses, you may notice upon close inspection some light scratches, dings etc... on the frame. So NOT perfect but is still impressive, quite rare, and still displays nicely. It is getting harder to get a hold of the small Beatrice Cenci Chromolithograph these days. Finding this large Exhibition version is a RARITY. Scarce and very collectible early chromolithograph from the Centennial Exposition of 1876. Measures overall about 33" by about 27 1/2" (including frame). Chromo itself measures about 25 3/4" x 20 3/4". Guaranteed an authentic 19th Century Chromolithograph. Selling AS IS.
