The 1965 National 400 was held at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 17th in front of 50,000 fans.  The 52nd race of the season saw Fred Lorenzen win the pole driving the Holman Moody #28 Ford.

This was a fantastic race that saw Lorenzen, A.J. Foyt, Dick Hutcherson, and Curtis Turner battle until the end when Lorenzen beat Hutcherson to the line by three car lengths.  Finishing third was Curtis Turner, followed by Ned Jarrett and LeeRoy Yarbrough.

By finishing fourth, Ned Jarrett was able to clinch the 1965 Grand National Championship.

Unfortunately, there was also a fatality in this race.  Harold Kite was killed instantly on the second lap when his car was t-boned in the third turn.
