The special unit was formed by veterans of the "AZOV" regiment, officers of the GUR MOU, ultras and volunteers on February 24, 2022 in Kharkiv, the unit consists of five battalions[1] and has the size of a regiment[2][3][4][5]. According to Budanov, the Kraken unit began to form 1.5 weeks before February 24 [6]
The unit is named after the Kraken, a mythical giant monster that brings death to enemies[2][5].
The special unit is headed by officers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. One of the commanders of the special unit are Kostyantyn Nemichev and Serhiy Velichko.
Starting from March and ending in October 2022 inclusive, in the Kharkiv region[7] with the participation of the Kraken special unit, the following were released: Vilkhivka[8], Lisne, Ruska Lozova[9], Pytomnyk[10], Belogorivka (Luhansk region)[11] [12], Verbivka, Balaklia[13][14][15], Borodoyarsk, Morozivka, Savyntsi[16], Dovhalivka, the left-bank part of Kupyansk[17][18][19], Podoli[20], Kup' Yansk-Vuzlovy[21], Kivsharivka[22][23], Novoosynovka, Hlushkivka[24], Kolisnikivka, Kislivka, Kotlyarivka[25].
Also, the unit took part in the battles for Kharkiv, Dementiivka, Stary Saltiv, Hrakovo, Zaliznychne, Kutuzivka, Velyki Prohody.
In January 2023, he took part in the battles near Soledar in the Donetsk regio]and in March - in Bakhmut].
