This lot consists of a gold-plated "Salesman's Sample" of the 1983 Edmonton Oilers Wayne Gretzky hockey dollar made by the Royal Canadian mint. When the mint produced these hockey dollars in 1983, the promoter had promised each of the players from the Oilers, Flames and Jets who were to be included in the final sets of seven of each team, that they would each receive a solid gold version of their individual coin, one of two that would be made. The mint was happy to supply the promoter with some gold-plated samples, and a few were evidently made of each player, including apparently the unissued players which were minted, but subsequently destroyed due to non-payment. My contact at the mint did not know how many, if any, of these were actually sent to the promoter, but did know that they had some that they kept as "salesman's samples" (his phrase), and he obliged by sending a couple to us, as we were negotiating to purchase the coins that had not already been sent to melt. Included with the gold-plated coin is a regular coin mounted on it's display card, plus a gem mint coin made of cupro-nickel, and a mint display card, (approx. 3" x 9") with the stats. (These were available in the Edmonton area only and were an actual trade dollar with an expiry date.) All coins measure 1 1/4" in diameter and weigh approx. 1/2 oz..
