Stuyvesant
Insurance
The
Stuyvesant Insurance Company was established in New York City in
1850. The company was named after Peter Stuyvesant, who formed
the first volunteer fire company in America, when he has the governor
of the state.
Stuyvesant Insurance used the governors figure/image as the company
logo. They ceased doing business in 1978.
Vintage
Stuyvesant
Insurance sign which is a variant of the one listed in “Signs of
Insurance” book as number TU #370.1 on page 122. The sign is from the
mid-1900's. It is of reverse glass construction with black lettering
stating “Agency of the Stuyvesant
Insurance Company Established
1850”
on a cream background. Sign measures approximately 19 3/4”X10 3/4”.
In good condition, with some minor
chips in the paint on the left side of the figures image.
This would make an excellent addition for any collector of signs, insurance company memorabilia, or a insurance agent/broker, or a company employee or retiree.
Peter
Stuyvesant
In
1648, the New Amsterdam governor Peter Stuyvesant appointed four men
to act as fire wardens. They were empowered to inspect all chimneys
and to fine any violators of the rules. Later eight prominent
citizens would be appointed to the "Rattle Watch". These
volunteers would patrol the streets at night carrying large wooden
rattles. If a fire was seen, the men spun the rattles, then directed
the responding citizens to form bucket brigades.
This was the
first volunteer fire company in America.
