The Great American Insurance Company traces it's roots back to their founding in 1872, under the name German American Insurance. The company's first policy was written on March 19, 1872. It's fire mark bore the German American name. In 1917, during World War I, with American and Germany on opposite sides of the conflict, the company changed their name to Great American Insurance.
