Key Specifications & Architecture
- Port Configuration: Equipped with a total of 30 ports: 6x 40-Gigabit Ethernet (QSFP+) uplink ports and 24x 10-Gigabit Ethernet (SFP+) ports.
- Packet Forwarding Engines (PFEs): Architecture relies on two distinct PFEs (PFE0 and PFE1). PFE0 manages Physical Interface Cards PIC0 (12x10GE) and PIC2 (3x40GE), while PFE1 manages PIC1 (12x10GE) and PIC3 (3x40GE).
- PIC Power Rules: Only two PICs can be powered on simultaneously (either PIC0 or PIC2 on PFE0, and either PIC1 or PIC3 on PFE1). By default, the system boots into a 24x 10GE configuration. Selecting an invalid combination will safely revert to default settings via Junos OS.
Features & Hardware Compatibility
- Chassis Modes: Operates exclusively when the network-services mode on the MX router is configured to either enhanced-ip or enhanced-ethernet.
- Control Boards: Requires enhanced Switch Control Boards (MX-SCBE or MX-SCBE2). It is entirely incompatible with legacy MX-SCB boards.
- Route Scalability: Standard pricing bundles incorporate full-scale Layer 2/2.5 features and reduced-scale Layer 3 features. This provides support for up to 2 million routes in the Forwarding Information Base (FIB), up to 6 million routes in the Routing Information Base (RIB), and up to 32 L3VPN instances per card. Full-scale L3 capabilities are unlocked under alternative ordering variants (e.g., the
MPC5E-40G10G-RB model). - Advanced Traffic Management: An optional licensing upgrade allows Hierarchical Quality of Service (HQoS) scaling up to 32,000 traffic queues.
