“ During the second half of the l9th century and early 20th century, pencils were made from solid pieces of softer grades of slate or soapstone and were used by school children to write on tablets made of harder grades of slate. Slate pencils were available with the slate core unwrapped, wrapped with paper, and encased in wood like a lead pencil. Holden & Cutter of Boston, Massachusetts and Grigg & Elliot of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania advertised slate pencils circa 1840~1860. This state pencil from the Civil War era is wrapped with a patriotic paper wrapper."
