Issued over two series, 1997 Topps Baseball has 495 cards. Series 1 has 295 cards while Series 2 has 200. Several checklist quirks exist. First, 1997 marked the first-year card 7 was intentionally left out. Topps announced it was retiring the spot in honor of Mickey Mantle.

1997 Topps Baseball includes 17 additional Mickey Mantle reprints. His main cards were featured extensively in 1996 Topps Baseball. The 1997 cards highlight subset cards. Basic reprints, which have a gold foil logo on the front, come in Series 1. Series 2 includes Finest and Refractor versions.

Willie Mays gets a similar set of reprints. 1997 Topps Baseball Series 1 has the basic versions while Finest and Refractor versions are in Series 2. Nineteen of the 27 cards have a limited number of autographed versions as well.

The only other autograph in 1997 Topps Baseball is a big one. Derek Jeter has a commemorative Rookie of the Year autograph randomly inserted in Series 2 packs.
